known instructor. Professor Marcelo began teaching in his home academy where he grew up and trained in Brazilian Jiujitsu. In 2004 Prof.De Souza received his Black Belt from the hands of the legendary Master Carlos Gracie Jr. In 2007, Prof. De Souza left Brazil to come to the United States to share his passion for teaching and unparalleled knowledge he acquired from great mentors such as Prof .Marcio Feitosa and Master Carlos Gracie Jr. himself. From 2007 to 2009 he was one of the original Assistant Professors at Gracie Barra America in California, the first Gracie Barra Academy in the United States and new home of Prof. Feitosa and Master Carlos Gracie Jr. Professor Marcelo has since gone across the United States helping Academies train new students in the skill, lifestyle and art of Brazilian Jiujitsu.

Steven was born and raised here in the north shore. He has two boys Sam 12 and Matt 14. After 23 years of trading and teaching at the CBOE, he found new passion in working directly with kids and adults to improve their lives. His decision to own, operate and teach at a Jiu Jitsu is the way he plans to live out this passion. He looks forward to giving students the chance to discover more about themselves and their potential in life through Jiu Jitsu.

Steven was a 3 time all american, top state contender and full scholarship gymnast in college At LSU where he studied psychology and business. He has practiced yoga for 10 years and is a certified yoga instructor. After 18 year of practicing  Judo, Thai boxing, Jeet Kune Do and wrestling he found Gracie Jiu Jitsu to be the most rewarding and effective form. He received his Blue Belt from Phillipe De Monica in 2010. He looks forward each day to sharing his love and knowledge with his students.

Coach Rob is a four stripe blue belt under head professor, Marcelo Souza. Rob was first introduced to Jiu Jitsu by a family member for self defense purposes and as a way to start a healthier life style.  Instantly Rob fell in love with jiu jistu and began to train every chance he could, eventually training everyday and sometimes twice a day.  One year and 50 lbs later, Rob took his passion and love of jiu jitsu to a new level by competing and becoming a certified Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu Instructor.
Coach Rob enjoys inspiring and working with both children and adults to help them meet their maximum potential on and off the mats.

Coach Scott Close

At the age of 9 years old, Scott’s older brother Doug exposed him to wrestling. Scott took to wrestling, competing in junior high tournaments and going to summer wrestling camps.  In high school, Scott was a four-year starter on varsity plus he competed in summer tournaments and summer wrestling camps to satisfy his competitive drive. Little did Scott know, at the time, that he’d continue his successful competitive wrestling career till his junior year in college.

After wrestling, Scott remained active in competitive bicycle road and mountain biking racing. In addition, Scott also enjoyed snow skiing throughout the winter months.

After several years of inactivity and because of health issue, at the age of 40 Scott joined Yu’s Yong-In Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do School. Under the guidance of Master Sung Ho Yu, 6th Degree Black Belt (WTF) Scott was able to reach the level of Senior Instructor 3rd Degree Black Belt (WTF). Scott taught many classes and competed in many sparring, forms and board breaking competitions.

At the age of 50 years old, Scott found Gracie Barra Deerfield and was introduce to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by Professor Marcelo de Souza and Coach Steven Malitz.  Scott tried the free intro class and signed up on the spot. Due to his wrestling background Scott felt at home on the mats.

Scott is on the mats every day learning and sharing the BJJ fundamentals and brings positive energy and enthusiasm to each and every class.  With almost a 3 years of BJJ instruction Scott is learning and excelling with each passing day. Scott is also helping to teach the GBK Program and completed the Gracie Barra ICP5 Program (coach certification) and other classes.   With over 20 years of grappling and martial arts experience Scott and is an asset at Gracie Barra Deerfield

Scott is married for over 23 years and has two lovely daughters, 20 and 19 years of age and lives in Lake Forest, Illinois.
